Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park is a beautiful place to visit year-round. But be warned that summer is one of its busier times of the year, with parking lots filling up quickly and sometimes lines at entrance stations between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Especially if you’re coming on a weekend! Early morning and late afternoon arrival and hiking times are recommended for those who want to cut down on the crowds they’ll be dealing with. And be sure to double-check the weather forecast before you leave for the park!
Discover the Beauty of Wildflowers
Estes Park’s wildflower season is during the summer months when the last flakes of snow have finally melted from the ground. In general, the higher the altitude of your hike, the later in the summer you can expect to see wildflowers pushing their way through the finally thawed earth. There are many places in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park that provide opportunities to wander among colorful fields of wildflowers. A great starting point for families is the trail that encircles Lily Lake. This relatively flat, gravel path is just a mile in length, making it easily accessible even for those with small children. The columbine, Colorado’s state flower, is often seen here, as well as tiger salamanders. Take the difficulty up a few notches by hiking Kruger Rock Trail, which ascends 1,000 feet and is four miles in length. Not only will you be rewarded with a high-altitude meadow teaming with blue and purple mountain irises, red kings crown, and yellow snow buttercups, but the lookout at the top provides sweeping views of Estes Park valley and the high peaks of the Continental Divide.
Dip Your Toes in the Lake
While the lakes in and around Estes Park are too cold for swimming even in summer months, dipping your toes in after a warm hike is a perfect reward for putting some tough miles behind you. Many of the hikes in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park lead to stunningly beautiful alpine lakes that provide a satisfying reward. Try the hike to Sandbeach Lake, which covers 4.5 miles and ascends 2,000 feet of elevation. As the name suggests, this lake offers a sandy stretch of shoreline perfect for enjoying a picnic and cooling off your feet before completing the return hike.
Lake Estes Marina
While you’re here, be sure to take your chance to get out onto the waters of Lake Estes. The Lake Estes Marina will be happy to rent you a variety of boats: one- or two-person kayaks, canoes, a stand-up paddleboard, paddle boats, or a deluxe fishing boat that will seat four, and seven- and ten-passenger pontoon boats. You can also rent bikes, pedal carts, and rods and reels.
The paved, four-mile path that encircles Lake Estes is a great place for cycling on a warm summer day. Rent bikes from the marina and set out on a scenic ride, soaking up views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
The marina is generally open from May to early October, with the marina store opening in March. Typically, boat rentals start the first week of May. Summer hours are every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Go Horseback Riding
Why walk when you can ride like the wind through beautiful mountain scenery? You can spend a couple of hours out on the trails or tackle the Rockies via horseback. There are quite a few ranches in Estes Park you can book a horseback tour with. Reach out to Sombrero Ranches, National Park Gateway Stables, Cowpoke Corner Corralor Estes Park Outfitters for more details about the riding options they offer.
