Estes Park is a lovely vacation destination, and during the winter you get the benefits of scenic, snowy Colorado and all of the great winter activities the Rocky Mountain National Park has to offer. You’ll have plenty of chances to see gorgeous trails, go skiing, sledding, or tubing, and so much more during your Thanksgiving getaway.
Thanksgiving is, of course, known for its massive feasts with friends and family. It’s a great holiday for bringing everybody together and celebrating the kick off of the joy and chaos of the holiday season with a nice, laid back gathering with good food and good company. What better way to beat the guilt of the calories from your impending Thanksgiving meal than by kicking your day off with a good morning run for a good cause?
Everything You Can Expect
The YMCA Turkey Trot is going to kick off at 9:00 AM on Thanksgiving Day, with check-in at 8:00 AM at the nearby Sweet Memorial Building. Registration is not required but is highly encouraged to help assess the amount of people that are going to be there for refreshments and overall traffic, but it’s completely free, so if you’re planning on coming through, it only takes a couple minutes of your time to sign up.
If you’ve got a competitive spirit, there will be a few prizes available. First place female, first place male, and 1st place person 16 and under will all receive prizes for their efforts, so come ready to run if you’re gunning for those rewards!
Don’t worry about it all being too competitive, though, because all participants are welcome to bow out whenever is most comfortable for them. If you’re short on time, or you just want to participate in a short section before heading back to your vacation home to get to work on your upcoming feast, you’ll be able to step out without worrying about getting your money’s worth since it’s all free! No matter how long you choose to stay in the running for, there will be a celebration after the race at the Sweet Memorial Building with refreshments and door prizes, so stop in and have a chat with your fellow runners!
Those feeling the giving spirit of the season will also be able to donate to support the local summer day camp scholarship program, and while donations are encouraged, they are of course not required for participation.
Lastly, the race is dog and stroller friendly, so if you’re travelling with the kids or the family pet, you’re welcome to bring them along. Just be sure your dog is on a leash at all times, or they won’t be able to join you.
