I Want Candy

What’s a Halloween in Estes Park without some sweet treats to munch upon? And you can do so much more here in Estes Park than just buying a mixed bag of candy from a big box store, and instead shop at one of our specialty candy stores. Laura’s Fine Candies at 129 East Elkhorn Avenue has been open since 1970 and offers toffee, fudge, popcorn, Bret Bars, caramel, and taffy. For saltwater taffy lovers, there’s The Taffy Shop at 121 West Elkhorn Avenue, another longstanding candy business that dates back to the 1930s. And for retro lovers, there’s The Old Fashion Candy Store at 102 West Elkhorn Avenue.

Elktober

October has the local nickname of Elktober, as the elk come out in droves for their mating season that’s in full force this time of year. With hundreds of elk living around the area, you’re likely to catch a glimpse of a fair few during Halloween in Estes Park. As dusk encroaches, you might even hear the sound of a bull elk’s bugle as he looks to intimidate his competition for a mate. If you want to increase your chances of an elk sighting, watch for them in the early morning or evenings. They can be found in certain areas of Rocky Mountain National Park and sometimes even just wandering around town.

Visit the Rocky Mountains

Known as the main base for enjoying Rocky Mountain National Park, be sure to bring your hiking boots along on your Estes Park Halloween getaway! As the summer crowds truly die off, it’s an excellent time of year to visit the Rocky Mountain National Park, avoiding the high traffic of summer and the worst of winter’s chills. Weekends are when the park sees the most traffic, so if you can it’s best to visit on a weekday. Get up there and explore, maybe take the chance to tell a few spooky ghost stories to your fellow hikers. It’s possible you’ll see some snow along the trail in late October, but many trails can still be enjoyed even when snow has blanketed the ground. Consider the Chasm Lake hike, leaving from the Long’s Peak Trailhead. This beautiful trail offers stunning views from Long’s Peak from below, so don’t forget to look up!

A Cabin in the Woods

At our cabins here in Mountain Village at Lake Estes, you’re unlikely to come face to face with any ghosts or goblins. So feel free to snack on a bowl of candy and watch a few spooky movies on a flat-screen TV with the family. The spacious great rooms in our cabins boast elevated two-story ceilings and a full wall of windows that let the in the wonder of the Estes Park outdoors. Whether you’re lounging on the comfortable modern furnishings in the living area or baking a sweet Halloween treat in the full kitchen, you’ll have everything you need to make yourself at home. The kitchen offers full appliances and cookware, as well as bar seating space perfect for enjoying meals in if desired. The soaring stone fireplace in the living room is perfect for nights when the cold air of fall has descended upon Estes Park. In addition to the indoor gas fireplace, a second gas fireplace can be found outdoors on the deck, keeping the air just warm enough to hop into the private hot tub. As the steam rises into the crisp air and you sink beneath the soothing bubbles, it’s hard to imagine how Halloween in Estes Park could get any better!

When it’s time for your head to hit the pillow, choose between two welcoming bedrooms in which to lay your head. The main level master boasts a spacious king bed and en suite bath. Head up the stairs in the living area to discover a roomy second floor loft, complete with an attached sitting area that overlooks the great room. An oversized barn-style door adds a trendy touch and still allows for plenty of privacy in the upstairs sleeping quarters.

Whether you plan to engage in some of the special Halloween festivities happening around Estes Park at the end of October or you simply want to enjoy the attractions and sights that make Estes Park such a great vacation destination year-round, you’re sure to have a memorable getaway to Estes Park this Halloween!
